Personal care

Personal care, from someone who already knows you.

Showering, dressing, grooming and medication prompts, from someone you already know.

Personal care is the part of home care people put off the longest, and it is easy to see why. Being helped to shower is not like being helped with the vacuuming. It asks something of you.

What makes it bearable, and eventually ordinary, is familiarity. The same two to four carers, who know that you like the water hotter than most people do, that your left shoulder does not lift the way it used to, and that you would rather be dressed before anyone else arrives in the house.

That is the whole reason Aldera is built around a Care Circle instead of a roster. You explain once. After that, the person at the door already knows.

Personal care is the most personal thing we do. It should never involve a stranger. Your Care Circle learns how you like things done once, and then it stays that way.

What this actually includes

  • Help with showering, bathing and grooming
  • Dressing and getting ready for the day
  • Medication prompts and reminders
  • Continence support, handled with dignity
  • Morning and evening routines that stay your routines

People call us when

  • Showering has started to feel unsafe, or someone has had a fall in the bathroom
  • Dressing takes so long that the morning is gone before it starts
  • Medication is being missed, doubled, or taken at the wrong time
  • A hospital stay has changed what is manageable alone
  • Family have been helping with personal care and it is straining the relationship

Not sure if this is the right support?

Talk it through with a real person. No obligation, and we call back within two business hours.

Common questions

Will the same person help me every time?
That is the point of the Care Circle. Two to four regular carers cover your visits, and you meet each of them properly before they work with you. If someone in the circle is away, we tell you who is coming and why, rather than sending an unfamiliar face without warning.
Can I ask for a carer of the same gender?
Yes, and for personal care most people do. Tell us at the first conversation and it becomes part of your One Story, so it never has to be raised again.
Can carers give me my medication?
Carers can prompt and remind you, help you get to your medication and make sure it is taken on time. Administering medication is a clinical task with its own rules, so tell us what you need and we will be straight with you about what we can and cannot do.
