How to choose an in-home aged care provider

The Aldera team Published 26 August 2026

An older woman warmly greeting her regular carer at the front door of her home.

Illustrative. Does not depict Aldera clients or staff.

Most in-home care providers say almost identical things: warm, compassionate, person-centred. The words are free. What matters is what actually happens at your front door on a Tuesday morning.

The question that separates good from average

Ask this, plainly: “How many different carers will come to my home?”

Continuity of care is the most common thing families complain about, and the thing most providers quietly cannot promise. A rotating roster means retelling your story to a stranger every week, re-explaining the medications, the routines, the way you like things done. A good provider gives you a small, consistent team and is not evasive about it.

What to look for

  • A small, regular team. Two to four familiar faces, not a lottery. This is exactly why Aldera builds every client a Care Circle.
  • A named, accountable contact. One human with a direct line, not a call centre queue.
  • A fast, human response. Ask how quickly a real person calls you back. If they are slow to answer while they are trying to win your business, that tells you something.
  • Genuine cultural and language matching. If your first language is not English, ask how they match carers. Real culturally matched care is woven through the service, not a page on a website.
  • Transparent costs. They should tell you what an hour costs and your likely contribution in writing, before you commit. Our guide on what in-home care costs explains how that is built.

What to look out for

  • Vague answers about who will actually turn up
  • Pressure to sign quickly
  • A phone number that rings out, or endless voicemail
  • Prices that only appear after you have committed

A simple test

Notice how the first phone call feels. Are you spoken with, or processed? The way a provider treats you before you are a client is usually how they will treat you afterwards.

When you are ready, take our ten questions to ask any provider with you, and ask us the same ones. We would rather earn your trust with straight answers than adjectives.
