How to get a My Aged Care assessment

Almost everyone who calls us feels the same way about My Aged Care at the start: a bit lost. That is normal. Here is the whole path, laid out simply.
Step 1: Register with My Aged Care
Everything starts at My Aged Care, the government front door for aged care. You can register online at myagedcare.gov.au or by phone on 1800 200 422. A family member, your GP or an advocate can do this with you or for you.
You will answer some questions about how you are managing day to day. Be honest about what is getting harder. This is not the moment to put on a brave face, because the answers shape the support you are offered.
Step 2: The assessment
You will be booked for a free assessment, usually in your own home. An assessor talks with you about what you can do, what is becoming difficult, and what would help you stay independent. Have someone you trust in the room if you would like.
It helps to jot down, beforehand, the specific things that are harder now: showers, meals, getting to appointments, keeping the house, staying connected. Concrete examples paint a truer picture than “I’m managing.”
Step 3: Your classification and budget
After the assessment you receive a classification under Support at Home, and with it a quarterly budget for services. Higher assessed need means a higher classification and a larger budget. You will get this in writing.
Step 4: Choose your provider
This is where you have real choice, and where we would love a conversation. You can compare providers and pick who delivers your care. When you talk to us, we explain exactly what your budget buys with Aldera before you commit.
If you want to understand costs first, our guide on what in-home aged care costs breaks it down.
